Basic knowledge for internet users

  1. Create a new account in Yahoo!
  2. Cut and paste between email and webpages.
  3. How to browse efficiently, keyboard shortcuts, finding text, alt-tab, url windows, the significance of capitialisation.
  4. All about yahoo (brief) &endash; history, merges, mailing lists, webpages, calendar, synchronisation, etc.
  5. About google. Searching effectively: use of quotation marks, cache, translations, using knowledge for better searches, e.g. 'Bukit Chandu' vs 'Ridge', citing original sources.

Principles - integrated into following session

  1. Who is your user?
  2. What are you trying to communicate? Information or entertainment?
  3. Ease of use issues - url names, download times, navigation aids, clear headings, readability, clear site map.
  4. Discussion of pages above: Asian Geographic, Nature Society (Singapore), The National University of Singapore, Tim's Diary, Otterman's webpage

  1. Yahoo! Geocities: create acount, build page (word or yahoo), upload
  2. Changing text and colour; use of, manipulations for effect, what not to do, use of fonts, contrast
  3. Hyperlinks (and email address), how to use and insert, new page or old.
  4. Inserting a picture.
  5. Inserting a counter.
  6. Providing an email contact.
  7. The fastest/easiest method at a new terminal: Word-"Save As", and upload.
