Welcoming the New Year!

Category : life in Singapore

We welcomed the new year with a regularly-scheduled walk of the Habitat Group briskwalkers from MacRitchie to Bukit Timah held every odd-Sunday of the month. We did not take the original route since there were too many runners getting ready to rip through the MacRitchie Nature Trail at 6.45am. So we opted instead for the "scenic route" through the old cross-country trail.

Finding my knee rather too loose form the last bicycle ride, and tired from 3am-turn ins the past two nights, I opted for a stroll and was joined by the other knee-injured, Ladybug and Alvin. We tagged ourselves the "walking wounded" and even headed for the boardwalk on the reservoir edge instead of the undulating terrain of the trail.

We reached Rifle Range Road by 8.25am, a record slow pace and with the drizzle picking up, decided to call for a cab! This unprecedented move after more than a decade of walking the route was good way to set the bar really low. Now we can only improve!

As if in punishment, we were overcome by the waft of monkey-dung as we sheletered at the old Chatered Industries carpark, the popular macaque hangout. Meanwhile, Robina, who never recovered from 5am hopes of a rain-cancellation, was snoozing at home. A pity, since she would have easily coped.

The briskwalk group had broken into four sub-groups, with our briskwalk captains/grandmothers reaching the summit in less than 2 hours. The second and fourth groups exited through Rifle Range Road. We of course took the cab all the way to Al Ameen! And the pleasant surprise that greeted us there was Lea Wee!

The briskwalkers eventually all reached the Al-Ameen and chatted merilly. It was a nice walk, although I had groaned to my Saints-kakis the previous night when we welcomed in the New Year at midnight. But I am so glad I went. And now, at least, I have one more target: summit BT via the old route in 1:40 by March!
