Preface

These are the lecture notes I have prepared for the course USSC3001: Complexity. "Complexity" is an advanced module hosted by the Faculty of Science, NUS, for the University Scholars Programme. The course website is located at:

The lecture notes do not necessarily reflect exactly all the material covered in class, but do so approximately.
The first edition of the notes was tested on a pioneering batch of students during the first semester of AY 2001-2002. The notes are currently being revised for the second semester's offering of the same module.
The material placed on the course website might one day be published somewhere. In the meantime the notes may be used for non-commercial, educational purposes with the usual "fair use" caveat.
